Education

In May 2015 I will graduate from the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin with a Master’s degree in information studies.  I previously earned a Bachelor’s of Science in economics from Texas A&M University. While studying at the iSchool I have focused on classes that would help me become an academic librarian. These courses include: Collection Development, Academic Libraries, Database Management, Survey of Digitization, Digital Libraries, Organizing Information, Subject Analysis in Library Catalogs, Information Architecture, and Introduction to Information Resources and Services.

Interest

I am principally interesting in becoming a cataloging and/or metadata librarian. I find this to be an evolving area in libraries with potential for exciting changes in the near future. To prepare myself in a career in this area I have taken advantage of training offered at the Texas A&M University Libraries such as webinars offered in cataloging, training to create records for the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO), and training to create records for the Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER).

Capstone

Additionally, my capstone project is original cataloging of serial publications at Cushing Memorial Library and Archives with a focus on the Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection. Here I am working with a fantastic collection of unique science fiction publications, publications produced by Texas A&M University, and electronic serials from the Directory of Open Access Journals. With each title I am attempting to create a CONSER authenticated bibliographic record and any accompanying authority records for as many titles as I can from the period of January to May 2015.

Work Experience

I am employed at the Texas A&M University libraries and in my current position am the interim supervisor of the Monographs Copy Cataloging Unit (5 full-time employees, 4 student workers), a cataloger of music materials (original and copy) for scores and sound recordings, and the coordinator for remote storage projects for monographs. This has allowed me to gain skills in supervision, leadership, training, management, and original and copy cataloging. In addition I've been in charge of authority control maintenance of the Texas A&M University Library Catalog through the global headings change program. For this I keep up with changes to LCSH and the Name Authority File when they enter our catalog and make sure all associated bibliographic records are updated appropriately.
